Day out at the Dunes

Here’s some shots from our day at the dunes. I know, I am obsessed with the dunes. And no it wasn’t a day for swimming. It was a day for digging and exploring and climbing and hiking.

I am thinking about marketing a new fitness video. It’s called Dune climb your way to a better body in 3o days. What a great workout.

We managed to find this nice little spot up in the dunes that sheltered us from the wind. Great for playing and posing.

Oh yeah, she likes to pose.

Things that make me smile, laugh or otherwise thankful I was alive to hear

In no particular order:

  • Not having to say “venti coffee of the day with room for cream please” because they have it ready for me by the time I get to the counter I my regular spot…Starbucks in the Radisson, Merrillville.
  • Live performance from Dustin Kensrue, lead singer of Thrice on Relevant Magazine’s podcast. He takes a decidedly different direction on his solo album Please Come Home. Think heavy influence of Johnny Cash. Dustin, a Christian, has always let his faith shine through his music without sacrificing art.
  • Watching my kids sleep.
  • And this quote from a Lead Pastor who will remain nameless:
“She holds this distinction in my life as the only girlfriend I have ever had who ‘s spent significant time in prison. How about that for ya?”

Ahhh…yes.

First Impressions of First Impressions and other stuff

So I was at this seminar today on how to give guests a WOW impression on their first visit. The premise of course is that if you can give a great first impression then people will be open to hearing the message. The seminar was actually really helpful and I am excited to put some new things in place.

I am sure that most people are bored with talk of this but I really wrestle with the wordage. As I mentioned before assimilation is the wrong word. Today one guy mentioned his role as that of “integration.” I like that better…but still not totally satisfied. I know the overarching role for me is helping people take steps to come back, to Jesus, with Suncrest and in growth.

On a related note, a Saudi Arabian man had his nose partly sliced off by his two wives when he suggested he get a third wife. :)

AND a preview from next week’s The Office with Jim imitating Dwight. Awesome!

Virginia Tech

I won’t try to say anything profound about the Virginia Tech tragedy. It is yet another example of evil run rampant in our world. The question I hear over and over is, “Could this have been avoided?” I suppose it is a natural question to ask. For me the obvious answer is yes. It could have been avoided if Cho Seung-Hui would have chosen a different path…his mom and dad and been involved…if more people would have paid attention…if Adam had not bit into the apple. Unfortunately there are a lot of what ifs, but we are really only left with what is. And for that I pray for the families and friends of the victims. And I pray we would all open our eyes to people around us who are hurting and crying out for help.

On a similar note, it is ironic that Greg preached this sermon just last Sunday. Great and timely message on “Where is God when it hurts?”

Maranatha (come Lord Jesus, come).

And the rest of things…

Hi. Welcome to etc. It’s my personal blog to say the things that are on my mind. I doubt seriously anyone really cares what’s on my mind but I have found this to be a good form to share life with others who blog.

Why in the world is it called etc.? Good question. I’m glad you asked. “etc.” comes from latin which means “and the rest of such things.” I thought it was a fitting description of what my blog is really about. For me it’s kind of like Paul Harvey’s “the rest of the story.” Whether it is the rest of the story from a message on Sunday morning, my journey in reading Scripture, or just thoughts on life, it’s my rest of thoughts.

Thanks for stopping by.
